The cost of the comfort zone is…? Insights from the book "Atomic Habits"

May is here…

It’s been 5 months since the new year. Many of us might have considered bringing out “the new version” of ourselves. Isn’t it? we fix so-called New year's resolutions right. How many of us stuck to them?? If you are on track….congratulations and keep going. But the issue is with the people who actually want to do something but don’t do it and also regret later for not doing the same thing. What a pity!!! Unfortunately, I belong to the same category. By the way, we have a brand name for our community that is Procrastinators.

Did you ever felt watching a movie or playing a sport boring? Of course, you might, but definitely not more the number of times you got bored of studying right? Obviously, the brain loves to perform tasks that provide more excitement and fun. so do we.

Our body is a very big fan of Newton’s First Law, The Law of Inertia remember? It states that a body tends to remain in its state of movement or rest unless acted upon by an external force. It doesn’t like to come out of its comfort zone. So, we need to provide an external cause to make our body work. What it could be? Let’s find out.

Our mind requires instant gratification, it always looks for instant pleasures that is the reason we all tend towards cozy zone. In order to be consistent with what we want, here are some of the tips to reduce the level of procrastination. The Atomic habits book helps to acquire a proper routine.

  1. Dream big but start small: Don't try to overstress yourself by starting big and leaving behind. Instead, start small. for example, if your goal is to read books start reading for 10 mins a day.

  2. Reward yourself for small wins: As I said before our mind needs instant results, so celebrate your small wins. We need to bribe her so she does for us. for example, If you read continuously for a week, bribe her with an ice cream treat.

  3. Set deadlines: we work better when we have a deadline. That pressure is the external force that drives us to complete any work.

  4. Use a planner: Writing down the tasks you have and checking the boxes after completion is an ultimate feel. Write down the tasks for the month, week, and day to make your life more productive. If you’re too lazy to maintain a planner at least make a to-do list for the day.

  5. Choose wisely: Our flickery mind always jumps from what we want to what we like. don't fall under her trap, even though it is tough, choose to be productive. We all have that starting problem, therefore it is important to choose wisely.

  6. get an accountability partner: be it your friend, your parents, or siblings, mention your goals to them and ask them to watch your behavior. It helps you to sustain your word.

  7. Take a break: Taking a break is as important as following the routine and it’s okay. But don’t skip twice, if you do so you’re gone. It feels like starting from Day 1.

The cost of the comfort zone is the pain of regret

The pain of discipline is uncomfortable but, the pain of regret is unbearable

Let’s get disciplined together.
